I had a friend in New York City who had problems with his vehicles getting stolen. Eventually, he simply gave up and left his car unlocked. He also completely removed the battery and used a portable jump-starter to start his car knowing that thieves tried and failed to steal it all day long while he worked.
A New Orleans Veterinarian is facing a similar dilemma, though his tactic to deter thieves is a little more aggressive. And nope, it’s not a gun…
As 4WWL News reported, Brenden Batt of Metairie uses a flashbang rigged inside his truck to effectively deter criminals.
Recently, he caught one perp on camera who was shocked, to say the least, about the “present” waiting for him.
A flashbang is a small charge of gunpowder used without a projectile. Often deployed by law enforcement, it is designed to surprise and disorient criminals.
The New Orleans Police Department (NOPD) acknowledge the victim’s frustration about the repeated break-ins, Batt has replaced the window on his truck at least seven times, but the department advised against explosive booby traps.

“While we understand the frustrations our citizens have with crime, rigging an explosive device to detonate inside a vehicle is illegal and a bad idea,” the department said in a statement.
“Not only is there a risk of injury to yourself and others, there could be serious legal ramifications for everyone involved,” NOPD continued.
While dangerous to potential thieves (and possibly yourself) I have to respect the ingenuity and pure gumption of a guy willing to go to such lengths to protect his property.
However, you have to wonder if the flashbang possibly caused more financial damage to the inside of his car than the broken window and the possible loss of some Ray-Bans.
Batt says he’s tested the system repeatedly to ensure it’s non-lethal.
“Every single night, yeah. I set it up religiously,” he explained. “Because I don’t want to walk out to a broken window and not have it detonate.”
“The way I’m setting it up, nobody’s going to get like really badly hurt. And that’s important to me because I don’t think blowing someone up fits the crime of someone breaking into my window,” he added.
Authorities have decided not to charge Brett with any crimes.
