Since its inception several years ago, Franklin Armory’s binary trigger line has expanded to include a huge variety of rifle platforms. Now, they’re jumping into the wonderful world of handguns.
Dubbed the “G-S173,” Franklin Armory’s new binary trigger and slide kit enable a Glock 17 to fire a round on the trigger pull and on the release—what the company calls “binary mode.”
GunsAmerica editor True Pearce called it “crazy,” “pretty awesome,” and “super impressive” when he got a chance to take the G-S173 for a spin at SHOT Show 2022.
The G-S173 kit ships with a flat-faced trigger along with a new slide. The slide features a “function selector” that allows the user to fire in standard and binary modes.
In standard mode, the pistol functions normally. In binary mode, the gun will fire a round on the pull and on the release. Users can also cancel the trigger release shot by toggling the selector to standard mode while holding the trigger.
The model we shot was fitted with a brace, but company reps told us the gun can be fired in binary mode without one. We didn’t test that claim, but you can bet we will when we publish a full review of the G-S173.
Franklin Armory reps told us that the model they brought to the range was a prototype. The final product will likely look different, but the functionality will be the same.
The full kit isn’t available yet, but company reps did give us a price: $899. That might sound steep, and it’s probably more than you paid for your original Glock 17.
But as Pearce points out in the video above, the feel of the trigger on the G-S173 rivals some aftermarket options. It features a flat face, a crisp break, and a positive reset (when not in binary mode, of course). We didn’t have the chance to break out the trigger scale, but the weight is also comparable to aftermarket trigger options. We’d estimate somewhere in the 5-6-pound range.
If you’re in the market for an aftermarket trigger and slide, you’re already looking at dropping a couple hundred bucks. Franklin Armory believes customers will be willing to spend another couple hundred to add the kind of functionality that the binary trigger offers.
