I love the P320. It’s become my favorite striker-fired, polymer-frame 9mm handgun. Part of that love is the fact I can instantly swap the grip out. I can use the stock P320 grip module, or I can get something fancy, like the subject of today’s article, the Mirzon grip module.
With the P320, I can change its size, shape, ergonomics, and hell even the magazine pattern it utilizes. I can swap all that without issue and do so in just a minute or two. The Fire Control Unit, or FCU, is the legal firearm portion, and it’s easily removable, and it can work with a variety of grip modules and slides.
This opened up an aftermarket for P320 owners, and that aftermarket produced the Mirzon grip module. I own several grip modules these days, and swapping FCUs takes no time at all. Clear the weapon, remove the slide, pull out the takedown lever, and pop the FCU out. Repeat the steps in reverse to install the FCU into the Mirzon. The Mirzon comes with a magazine release installed, so that is all there is to it.
Why The Mirzon?
Of all the grip modules on the market, why would you choose the Mirzon? Well, the Mirzon promises a few things that appealed to me. First, the primary advantage it offered to me was a reduction of recoil. Mirzon used accelerometers to test the grip, and they reportedly found a reduction in recoil.
Next, they rubberized the grip texture and made it ‘sticky’ and unrelenting. It’s supposed to provide a better grip that keeps the gun locked in your hand and prevents the thing from moving. They aimed to improve the ergonomics as well with an extended beavertail with a unique design. It wraps downwards and around your hand, and the trigger guard undercut allows your hand to sit high on the gun and exert more control.
Overall the main promise is improved ergonomics and reduced recoil. That’s not something I’d argue against by any means. I’ll take that and embrace it wholeheartedly. These are big claims, and I got a Mirzon grip module to test these claims.
Compatibility and the Mirzon
First and foremost, when you purchase a new grip module, you likely want to ensure it’s compatible with your gun and your magazines, holsters, etc. The Mirzon is designed for 9mm and 40 S&W SIG P320s and is designed to use 17 rounds and longer. However, Mirzon makes a baseplate for 15 round magazines to fit inside the grip module.
The gun will fit full-size, X5, and compact slides, except the X-Compact slide. That covers most P320s out there. The magazine well can work the SIG mag funnel and the X5 grip weight. Also, those with an M17/M18 or safety enhanced SIG P320 can order the grip module with a cut-out for a manual safety.
Since it’s 2021, of course, the gun comes with a Picatinny rail. The rail offers four slots and plenty of room for your light, laser, cup holder, kitchen sink, etc. It will also function with the full-sized, X5, and compact holsters.
Testing the Claims
My Mirzon grip module is all fancied up. Mirzon offers a ton of different cerakote color options, or you can save a little money with the basic plastic colors. I have the X5 grip weight and Mirzon magazine funnel equipped to the gun. The FCU uses the Legion trigger, and the SIG slide also pairs with my ROMEO1PRO optic.
My first impression was a good one. The grip contours to your hand exceptionally well. It feels fantastic, and the front and rear rubberized textures are lovely. It does grip back as your grip the gun.
The curved beavertail and trigger guard undercut allows for an excellent high grip on the gun. The grip fills the hand nicely, and I thought the finger grooves might annoy me. I was surprised they felt so good in my hand. The difference from the standard P320 grip is evident, and the grip is extremely comfy.
I know what you’re thinking. Does it reduce recoil? Can good ergonomics do that? Well, I can’t help but notice that there is less felt recoil. The gun moves less all around. Maybe it’s the higher grip or the grippy material, but the difference is noticeable. I did the ole 10-10-10 drill with the Mirzon grip and the standard grip.
Rocking and Rolling
Keep in mind I have a lot more experience with the standard grip than the Mirzon, and I still ended up shaving off .3 to .5 of a second, depending on the run. The grip makes a difference, especially through long strings of fire. The grip never wrestled its way out of my perfect grip so I could go fast and hit my target.
I can say the grip weight helped with some recoil reduction, but I think it’s more to do with the design of the Mirzon grip module. I’m not seeing nearly half a second better 10-10-10 drills due to just a grip weight.
The big Mirzon magwell was a nice touch to jam those magazines in. They flow out of the gun without interruption when you hit the magazine release button. Speaking of, that big button is palace perfectly. My thumb just needs to move a hir, hit the button, and I’m good. There is no big shift of grip to get to that magazine release, so it’s nice and easy to swap mags.
The Challenge
So what’s the Mirzon for? Well, it’s perfect for anyone who wants to improve the ergonomics of their P320. It’s not pigeonholed to defensive or competition roles. It would excel at either, and the same goes for concealed carry. The grip texture clings to the hands but also doesn’t rub you raw when carried tight to the body in an IWB configuration.
Ultimately I think the Mirzon is a mighty good means to upgrade your P320. If you’re looking to build your own P320, the Mirzon grip module will be a great place to start. I’ve got the X series, the AXG, and the S300 grip module, and the Mirzon is by far my favorite so far.
