Springfield is showing off their newest family of firearms at SHOT Show this year, the 911s. Springfield 911 pistols are micro 1911s chambered for .380 ACP, designed to be light and unobtrusive for deep concealment.

While these look similar to other 1911-style .380s, through careful materials selection and engineering, Springfield’s managed to make these sleeker and lighter without dropping build quality or features.

Like the Colt Mustang and others, the 911s are hammer-fired, single action pistols designed to be carried cocked and locked, and to disappear even in tight-fitting formal, business and sport attire.

Overview

Springfield is launching with two 911 models, one with an all-black finish and the other with a two-tone look. Both have 7075 T6 alloy aluminum frames with stainless steel slide assemblies.

These are tiny guns with sub-3-inch barrels and short, flat grips. Springfield’s 911 pistols weigh less than 13 ounces unloaded, with the magazines — no small feat for an all-metal .380 build.

They also have real sights. These 911 pistols come standard with Springfield’s Pro-Glo night sights, which pair a big yellow outline tritium front sight with a two-dot white outline tritium rear sight.

While these 911s are not fully ambidextrous they do have dual manual thumb safeties and all the controls are extended. It has large rear cocking serrations for easy slide manipulation.

Impressions

Springfield Armory’s 911 packs a lot of punch in a small concealable package. The lightweight 7075 T6 aluminum frame and black Nitride or stainless 416 steel slide measure 5.5 inches long and less than 4 inches high with a snag-free profile.

The 911 has some 1911 elements, although it is not one. The engineering department at Springfield Armory realized they could make the gun even smaller by keeping some 1911 design features while dropping others.

The result is a pocket pistol that is perfect for everyday carry. The controls are extremely similar to a full-size 1911, including a thumb safety. The trigger is awesome, which is easy to do when you are backed up by a manual safety. The sights are large for this category and very easy to use.

Concealed Carry guns can often be too large to carry everywhere or be too small to be shootable. And some carry guns have near useless sights and terrible triggers. None of this is the case for the Springfield 911 series.

If you are in the market for a very small and light carry gun, this one is a winner. I bag on the .380 round a lot, but this little gun will sling them. With this platform, I can absolutely hammer targets.

I have more than a few rounds on the 911, as I’ve spent time on the range with it a few months ago. Even if you think the gun looks a bit different it is worth checking out.

Pricing

Both 911 models have a suggested retail price of $599 which works out to about $500 or less on the street. That’s not at all pricey for guns with best-in-class weight and not just real sights, but night sights, standard.

On top of it these have the Springfield name backing them for aftermarket and customer support. Finding holsters for these won’t be a problem even at launch.
