Yes, SCCY Is Still King of the Double-Action Only Subcompact Handgun – SHOT Show 2022

If you asked most gun companies to produce a double-action-only subcompact handgun that’s pleasant to shoot, popular with thousands of gun owners, and only costs $300 MSRP, you’d be laughed out of the room.

Of course, SCCY isn’t “most gun companies.” Their line of CPX handguns has done the seemingly impossible, and we stopped by their booth at this year’s 2022 SHOT Show Range Day to take a look at their latest offering: the CPX-9 Gen III.

SCCY owner Joe Roebuck believes nobody should be priced out of the Second Amendment. In line with that mission, the 9mm CPX-9 will hit the shelves at less than $300, but that doesn’t mean users should expect subpar performance. The new double-action-only hammer-fired handgun has seen some major improvements, and the CPX-9 is entirely American made.

First, the polymer trigger has been replaced with a metal one. The old polymer triggers could wear out and “get sloppy,” according to Chris Cerino, but the new metal triggers won’t have that problem.

The CPX-9 has a reduced grip size for easier concealability, and SCCY engineers removed the finger grooves for better ergonomics. The slide features a new profile, and the sights use the Glock 43 cuts to allow for a greater range of aftermarket options.

SCCY’s new CPX-9 makes several great improvements over previous iterations of the CPX.

And, like all SCCY pistols, the CPX-9 comes in a wide variety of colors to match the needs and desires of any gun owner.

All of this combines to produce an excellent shooting experience. GunsAmerica editor True Pearce called the trigger “impressive,” and said the gun is “very controllable” despite its miniscule size.

Much like a double-action only revolver, the CPX line of SCCY handguns uses an internal hammer cocked and dropped by pulling the trigger. While double-action handguns are usually difficult to shoot, SCCY engineers their handguns with a manageable trigger pull that even novice gun owners can manipulate.
