Savage Arms is expanding their high-end AR-pattern rifles with the new MSR 10 Competition HD. Chambered for .308 Winchester, the MSR 10 Competition HD is a premium rifle that comes stacked with high-end components.

Savage’s goal was to produce a custom shop rifle for the commercial market. And their results are impressive.

Like all competition rifles, Savage started with the barrel. Partnering with Proof Research, Savage built the MSR 10 Competition HD around a custom hybrid carbon-fiber wrapped barrel. Measuring in at 18 inches, the barrel uses a proprietary threaded gas block journal and adjustable gas block.

The gas block isn’t clamped on or pinned, it’s retained with a nut that threads on from the front. This helps promote accuracy by exerting pressure directly rearward on the gas block and barrel. The barrel has 1-in-10 5R rifling and with the adjustable gas block, can be tuned to run just about any kind of ammo. Even the muzzle brake is adjustable to control the recoil impulse.

The gas block is also railed to mount an iron sight directly to the barrel. Savage uses an extended custom-length gas system with the MSR 10 Competition HD for smoother cycling.

Of course the barrel and handguard are free-floating, and the handguard has M-Lok slots for accessories like the included reversible quick-detach sling swivel. The top of the handguard is smooth without a rail to cut weight and has full-length 12-o’clock serrations to reduce glare.

With its modular handguard and carbon-fiber barrel the whole package weighs in at just a hair over 9 pounds unloaded.

Other features include a bolt carrier group with a nickel-boron finish, a two-stage match trigger, and ambidextrous safety levers and magazine release buttons. It comes with a Hogue pistol grip and detachable flared magwell extension.

The MSR 10 Competition HD also has enhanced forged receivers with a non-reciprocating left side charging handle in addition to a standard rear charging handle. The endplate provides a second ambidextrous QD sling swivel.

Each rifle comes with a 20-round Magpul magazine where available. The suggested price is $3,449 with real-world prices starting around $2,800. Considering all the features in this package, it would be hard to build a competitive rifle for less.

While the AR-15 market is pretty straightforward, .308 ARs can be more complicated. With the MSR 10 Competition HD, Savage is offering shooters a complete package that’s out-of-the-box ready for competition.
