Gun violence has been a leading political issue for decades. The discussion becomes the forefront topic every time a misguided individual decides to use a firearm to bring about their evil purposes. Politicians use every such incident to call for sweeping legislation and 2A reform.

A new report by the YouGov Social Change Monitor looked at the nation’s temperament concerning gun control. It surveyed not only how Republicans and Democrats feel about guns and the 2A but also how the various generations feel about the subject.

To recap, the report states that overall 55% of the population believes that gun laws should be more restrictive than they currently are. Within that statistic, 79% are Democrats while 29% are Republicans.

Additionally, 56% of Democrats believe that the 2A is meant to protect the rights of militias. Only 20% of Republicans share the same sentiment. The other 80% of Republicans believe it means protection for everyone’s access to firearms.

Gen Z and Millennials Vs. Older Generations

First, the report dissects the Republican party. The generations are broken up with Gen Z and Millennials on one hand (adults born in 1982 and earlier) and Gen. X, Boomers, and the Silent Generation (adults born before 1982) on the other.

According to YouGov America, 39% of Gen Z/Millennial Republicans believe that gun regulation should be stricter. This is way up from the 22% of the pre-1982 generations that believes the same.

Likewise, 32% of young Republicans believe that the 2A is meant for militias vs. individuals, over double the number of older republicans that hold the same belief (13%).

Looking at Democrats, age has an inverse effect on the issue. To explicate, 69% of Millennial/Gen Z Democrats believe in stricter gun laws whereas 87% of the older Democrats want tougher gun laws.

Concerning the constitution, however, older and younger Democrats agree equally – 56% and 55% respectively – that the 2A is contingent upon militia service.

In Conclusion, it appears that younger Republicans are more open to increased gun regulation as opposed to their older party members. Additionally, younger Democrats tend to follow suit with their older counterparts.

It is important as Americans to be involved in the political process. The 2A is a keystone of our Republic and ensures the continuance of freedom in the country. If the gun community doesn’t do a better job of educating young people of all political stripes about the critical nature of the 2A, it may not be around for future generations.
