Noreen Firearms has a new AR patterned rifle. A new AR. Right. We’ve heard that a lot at SHOT show. You don’t even have to be here in Vegas to hear someone yammering on about a new AR. But Noreen’s guns are a little bit different. It’s an AR all right, but not a 15 or a 10. An AR 10 isn’t a big enough platform for this big boy. We are talking a true long-action AR. One big enough for 30-06.

This odd rifle is the BN36, a logical twist on the old Stoner design. I can see how these rifles could be useful in Montana, where Noreen Firearms makes their guns. That’s a big western state where finding some BLM land to throw lead past 1,000 yards is easy enough to do and also a great place to hunt some of the biggest North American game at extended ranges.

The BN36 weighs in at 8lbs and sports a 22” barrel. The price is around $2,000 depending on options. Noreen also make a number of other AR and bolt action rifles in large calibers. If 30-06 isn’t big enough for you, check out the Bad News model in .338 Lapua. It’s an AR too.

going back to bill. guess what they used to give us our freedom to choose between the weapons (firearms) we have today. Single shot. And some that i have seen looked pretty dang scary long a blade attached on the end about as long as a sword blowing fire and bellowing smoke yeah buddy what do you think would of happen if those men that fought for our freedom had nothing but pitch forks and shovels it isnt the gun that kills or robs heck i have guns and they havent gone out and killed anyone or robbed them it is no different than saying cars and trucks and planes and boats and anything else with a motor kills people i know right now the eye for an eye thing yeah

I owned one of the Noreen AR-10 .30-06. It was extremely accurate, but the magazines were junk. The rifle developed feed problems from weak magazine springs, the bolt would slide forward and crush the cartridge because the cartridge wouldn’t chamber properly. Ordinarily I would have gone elsewhere to get better magazines, but these are proprietary. I had the choice of either using it like a bolt action, designing and building better magazines, or selling the rifle. Since the .308 has similar ballistics for hunting within 500 yards, and only a difference in drop of about 6 inches at 1,000 yards between .308 and .30-06, I opted to sell the rifle at a loss and buy an AR10 chambered in .308. Additionally, the charging handle isn’t screwed into the bolt carrier group with a traditional AR10, thus not worrying about the threads eventually wearing out. The Noreen was nice, performed as advertised, at first, but it sucked in performance over time. I was very dissatisfied.

  I also purchased a Noreen 30.06. It also had the feed problems you mentioned. In addition the barrel was loose, the gas port was not in alignment, and the magazines were junk. I sent it back to Noreen and a couple of weeks later it came back with a new barrel, new bolt, new magazines along with a video of 8 test shots. I’m planning on reevaluating it today. I’m pleased that Noreen seems to be trying to make things right.

Love these people that “think” someone is going to buy a $2000 plus dollar rifle (or worse yet, a $20,000 plus dollar LEGAL machine gun) to knock off a liquor store or convenience store for $98.07 If someone earned or stole their way into that much cash to butya higher end firearm I’d have a feeling said firearm would be sold before it was used for a petty theft.

Jeff, that is an interesting perspective. Iron sights? Why not use a spear or knife. I still prefer the Ma Bell philosophy; Reach out and touch someone, long distance. I dont need to see the whites of the eyes of the elk, water bufalo, rhino, or elephant I am going to kill. If it comes down to a zombie apocalypse, the further the better. I do have iron sights on my rifle, I just dont want to ever need them.

  Yet long range shooting is just as difficult as stalking….you do realize this rifle isn’t about hunting, right? It’s a long range platform for 1000 yard LR match shooting. If you think dropping coyotes with a 260 Dingo at 700-1000 yards is easier than stalking, I’ve got a rifle and thousands of rounds that’ll prove you wrong.

Ah yes: THE 1919BAR brought back to life. Dillinger and Clyde knew what they were good for, and made good use of them. And the $2k is a pretty decent price for that kind of firepower. How well it shoots at 1,000 yards with high end bases, rings, and scope will be the acid test. And thanks to the gentleman who brought up the .300 Win in this AR format. I’d take a serious look at it, but I’ve put so much in my .300 W’by there just isn’t financial room for everything I want…. 20mm Solothurn, .50 Ma Deuce , .50 Barrett, Minigun, and other little things to play with.

Let’s keep everything on the intelligent side of things. People are entitled to think what they want.
I think there should be a lane for drunk driving, a north south lane with very high fencing to keep all the parts from getting all over the place. I also don’t think we need to call people names like we were in grade school.
Lizzy Borden used an axe we didn’t make axes smaller. In her day everyone had guns but people had more respect for one another. It’s the lack of respect in everything that has damaged this country. No sense of responsibility to our fellow Americans unless we agree with them politically or they are of the same economic class. I’m 49, I grew up pretty comfortable now not so much. In my fathers day taxes for the Upper most were 90% we still had plenty. We put people on the moon fought and won the Viet Nam war just gave it all way. Built the interstate highway system most bridges etc. We need to calm down crack a cold one around the fire and brake out the photo albums to see all the wonderful woods and rivers we all used to go hunt and fish in. They’re all disappearing guys. Where I live you can’t shoot even if you wanted to. There just are too many people in the way. No creeks anymore the land is dying. It’s not about the 2nd amendment anymore..It’s about the right to have the places we went with our Fathers and Grandfathers. Speech over and God Bless

I know because my Dad and I hunted on Grandads property since I got old enough to learn all I could about rifles and revolvers . Well Dad told me that Poppa had to sell a lot of his land or trade it for chickens ,mules cows, hogs and a lot of things he needed so his family could survive through the depression . Man did he take care of my Dad and other family members, thats when he said to me ;You will see a recession soon but I hope you never see a depression .   Simply put, the media is lying to you. Check the FBI crime stats on the FBI web page, no biased data. A so called “assault weapon” is used in fewer than 100 murders per year across the entire country. In order of weapons used i believe it goes like this: #1 is handguns, #2 is going to be 22lr rifles (most accessable) #3 is going to be hunting rifles and shotguns, and well below hammers, baseball bats, and even bare hands will be the scary looking self-loading (aka semi-automatic) “assault weapon”
  If you want to really look at the skewed perception, look at movies with automatic rifles (machine guns) and then try to figure out how many people are killed annually by gun owners with legally purchased and owned fully automatic rifles (known as class III) The answer will surprise you since it’s an infinitely low number of ZERO in 80 years. Yes, you cannot find a single case of a civilian with a legal machine gun committing murder (there was one police officer, but I’m sure the left will ignore the fact that that’s the only group they want with these weapons), it simply does not happen other than in the movies.

  Any gun can be used as a war gun. During times of war people use anything they can find to fight with. Sticks, stones, hands & feet, knives, lumber, baseball bats, tire thumpers, steel bars and pipes, explosives, traps, improvised traps and wounding devices, Bows and arrows, and any type of handgun or rifle to be found. That said, every thing mentioned is an implement of war. Yet every item mentioned has other other uses and it is only when a human takes it upon themself to use any one of these items in a destructive manor that they may be used in a manor to hurt, injur or kill another human being that people such as yourself jump up on a box and start shouting how terrible the inanimate object is that the bad person used to do damage. If you take away the guns, there are dozens of other methode an idiot may use to damage and destroy. Pipe bimbs, car and trucks rigged with explosives, and even pressure cookers rigged with explosives as in Boston. I gue4ss we had better ban anything that an idiot could use as a weapon. That would be everything from pencils to pressure cookers.

You have Socratic flaws in your argument to begin with – these rifles are “crazy looking”, which by any measure – no one who is familiar with shooting or firearms would probably say this considering how widespread the AR style MSR is in this country. Continuing on to “war guns.” Bill, my boy, what gun types haven’t been (at one point in time or another) considered guns that were used in war?
  
  We need more single shot rifles? Judging by that statement, you would be fine with the single shot .50 cal BMG then (contradicted by your request for reduced firepower)? How do we keep “war rifles” (same as “war guns” or not? oh, different topic?) away from crazy people? How do we keep drunks from driving? That type of thinking is irresponsible – that means that you rely on and truly believe that legislation does anything to deter crazy people. If they are insane and proceed to commit horrendous acts (sometimes with firearms) then breaking some pointless gun law aimed at legal ownership won’t do a thing. Not to mention that these types of weapons account for about as much crime as your post counts for sensible gun legislation. You mentioned the money factor. I hate to tell yah, but I have seen some pretty expensive double and single barreled firearms that would probably fit your description as “non-war guns” that would make the cost of these ARs look like a bad tip at a greasy diner. As far as firepower is concerned – Bill, they are not inventing quantum powered rail ammunition launched at .99c where c= speed of light and the mass of the projectile is infinitely increasing as it approaches light speed here. The .30-06 is from…get ready Bill…1906. BEFORE World War I, where I might add – they used bolt action rifles. Finally – keep it safe? SAFE!? Don’t even wax responsible and laud yourself proudly that your post ever had safety as its primary concern. The NRA will do more for gun safety in this country just this weekend than any politician (or any ignorant internet thread posters named Bill Brown) will do in a year.

It’s not all about money Bill it’s about advances in technology that make better and actually safer guns than your silly old single shot guns. It’s about making products that young people who are just getting into shooting or have been shooting for only the past few years will want to shoot!   You are kidding right, some how I think you did not serve in the milatary correct? If you look at the statistics these guns are rarely used for anything illegal. There are many of use that fiired these weapons in the service and wanted to continue in my case long range competition in other hunting. You want more single shots for what reason?” A trained sniper needs only one round to kill someone and I served with many that could take out a dozen enemie troops with a good single shot rifle. You are exactly the type the politicians play to I mean the test they use to determine if a gun is good or bad is how it looks and in what way does it resemble something used in combat. Do you know how many service men brought home the 1903 Springfield or Mauser to turn in to hunting rifles. The only way these weapons would make any difference over what we have now is in trained hands and as crazy as things can get in the “Fog of War” there aren’t many of us out there picking off civilians and for the untrained it doesn’t matter. Stop watching TV I know some of these weapons are black and scary to look at but are no more dangerous in the right hands they say a Remington 700 Bolt Action in .308. They again they are converted for milatary use so no one should have one, give me a break lets start working with the facts I think the framers had a reason for wanting this ammendment to be numberr 2. If civilians were disarmed in 1775 there would be no USA nothing has changed except how much time people spend watching TV.

Hey Noreen, I would like one chambered for 35 Whelen. Same parent case as the 270 Winchester and 30-06 Springfield and knocks ’em dead like a lightening bolt! Just add a barrel bored for a .358 bullet ( rifling should be 1:12 or 1:14 for the heavy bullets). I’ll buy one.

At 8 lbs., that bad boy is pretty impressive but what does it weigh fully loaded? Probably not something you are going to carry around in the woods or climb up a mountain with… Ringing gongs out to 1000, 2000 meter or more is nice if that is what makes your day but personally, I prefer a 3006, which happens to be my personal all-time favorite caliber, in a lighter weight small compact hunting rifle. Just my opinion. Enjoy your “GONG” shooting.

  Hey Greg, how about you go ring your own gong and try to know what you are talking about next time! The .300 win mag is a much better flatter shooting round than your 30-06 and the Nemo rifle is used for much more than ringing gongs! It was actually developed by a retired Special Forces General and some of the men that worked under him so it’s a fantastic sniper rifle and long range hunting rifle! It weighs around 10.5-11.5 loaded with a quality lightweight scope attached, and it’s an awesome rifle. If you can’t haul around 11lbs in the field then maybe you shouldn’t be hunting and you should exercise more often! I looked at those Noreen rifles and I am not that impressed from the video and pictures. I would have to examine one in person and shoot it to decide. Oh 15+ years in the Army, fought in 2 conflicts, Desert Storm, and 2 tours in Iraq. I was injured badly during my second tour and I am Medically Retired now. I spent 2 years on the Army Shooting team as well, so,I may know just a little about long range weapons. Now don’t get me wrong the 30-06 has its place, and yes we have used it in battle but it’s not the optimum round for that use. I think it is a good medium range hunting round, but not a military round anymore. We have the 5.56 for short to medium range, the 7.62×51(.308) for medium to longer distance, and the .300 Win Mag, .338 Lapua, and .50 BMG for long range rifles.
  
  For me I use the .300 Win Mag or .308 for most all of my hunting except varmint and small to medium predator (coyote, mountain lion) which I use either the .223/5.56 or one of my favorites the .243. I also enjoy the .260 which is an excellent alternative and flatter shooting than the .308. So please don’t make fun of something you don’t know anything about it’s not becoming and makes people look ignorant. Enjoy your 30-06 hunting and have a great day

    Hey army 127 , for being in the military you should show a little more respect for the public. I hate the fact that you got hurt but don’t take it out on the rest of the public , as far as a 300 win mag goes it doesn’t compare to my 338 lapua magnum. But its really sad to hear someone who has done so much for our country. The army is not the only place to learn about long range guns.

Have you guys checked out another Montana AR company called NEMO? They have the AR in .300 win mag with patented recoil reduction so even a small frame woman can shoot comfortably. These guys are railing gongs out to 2000 yards.

  That seems like a much more viable option. There just isnt enough extra from .308 to 30-06 for most guns to spend that much on a different gun. If I were looking to step up why half ass it by only going up roughly 5-10% when for around the same price I can go up 30% in performance? The whole concept just kinda seems like a waste of energy. Im sure theyll sell a few but the AR10 is too established and available to try to swtich, or even start in the smaller market of 06.

Finally they are starting to make the guns in the right Caliber. These look very good for 30-06 and the 308 which is right behind the 30-06 in power and foot pounds for big game.

  there was a reason the military went from the 30-06 to the .308. New inovations in powder technology allowed them to shorten the case length and reduce use of raw materials, reduce the size of the firearms platform, reduce wieght, while maintaining the same ballistics. 06 and .308 are both very similar and often it comes down to the load your using and gun your putting it through to get the extra performance. While newer 06 will out perform .308 using the same barrel length and action when you run them through a gas gun your loosing energy. And the differences between the two dont really merit the price of what the knew rifle will cost. With a good gun and good shooter .308 will reach out past 1000yds, just as an 06 will. If you really want a difference step up to 300win mag, 300 ultra mag, 338 mag, ect. Why spend so much on such a small boost when you could get much more for about the same price? Then theres availability .308 is by far more popular then any of the previously mentioned rounds, both factory, and reloading components are more then plentiful as opposed to 06.

    Why a 30-06?? Same fodder feeding the Garands, the BAR, the old 40-Xs, all the old rem700s and pre64 model 70s. Add to that those that want to do this in 25-06 or 270. Sorry I digress. Why not??

      During Obama’s big ammo scare did you see any 308 on store shelves? I sure didn’t, but you know what I did see in GREAT abundance? 30-06. Everybody had it, and at regular prices. That is why the very first rifle I bought was a 30-06.

    The only reason for this in .30-06, for me at least, is continuity of ammunition. A Garand, A 1903 MK I, Rem 700, Rem 742, and a 1919A4 Semi. ( I wish I could afford a full) I also have been looking at building a Gatlin in this caliber, just for fun.
