No Mag Loader Required: Get an SPD Magazine!  — SHOT Show 2022

in SHOT Show 2022

AT SHOT Show 2022, we had a chance to swing over to SPD Mags. They make proprietary magazines for Glocks and ARs that are equipped with a built-in, patent-pending device that allows you to manually crank or twist down the spring and follower in the magazine to make loading a breeze.

Pretty innovative.  Watch the video above to see precisely how it works.

SPD magazines are made in the USA and assembled from “the highest quality materials,” according to the company.

“Polymer parts, including the follower, are made from 30% carbon fiber reinforced polymer, not glass-filled as found in other firearms products,” states the website.  “Also, the metal parts are 6061 anodized Swiss machine aluminum, 302 stainless steel, and 17-7 stainless steel.”

SPD Mags come with a lifetime warranty.

SPD Mags come with a 30-day unconditional, money-back guarantee for unsatisfied customers. And a lifetime warranty for satisfied customers.

Prices start at $49.99 for Glock and AR mags. Though they told us at SHOT that they plan to make SPD mags for other popular firearms in the near future.

My initial take is that they seem like a great range mag. They’ll save your thumbs and you won’t have to worry about bringing along any other contraption to help you reload.

But I’m not sure I’d use them for everyday carry, concealed or otherwise. For me, it’s not so much a reliability issue with the mags (on that note, we’ll need to get some in for testing) as it is a size issue. No getting around the fact that the component at the base of the mag adds size. I like a flush-fitting mag when I carry.
