A South Florida woman, deeply concerned for her and her children’s safety, represents a growing number of Jewish mothers turning to firearms. These individuals, who never imagined owning a gun, now see it as a necessity for self-defense.

Michelle, a local mother, expressed her anxiety about her children’s safety. She, like many others, is deeply troubled by the increasing hate crimes and violent rhetoric targeting Jews.

David Kowalsky, a Miami-area gun store owner, is responding to this trend by offering firearm instruction classes. His classes, once a week affairs, have now increased to one or two daily. These sessions attract a diverse group, including grandmothers, reflecting the broad concern within the community.

“These are mothers, teachers, the majority of them are mostly people who have never interacted with firearms or thought about owning them,” Kowalsky told NBC News. “There’s a safety concern. I think people are nervous about what’s going on and what can happen.”

The classes gain momentum as the situation in Gaza worsens, and fears of backlash against Jewish communities rise. Kowalsky notes a significant uptick in Jewish Americans seeking self-defense training post-Hamas invasion.

While many newcomers to Kowalsky’s classes express reservations about using guns, they feel compelled by the need to protect themselves and their families. The growing concern among Jewish communities underscores the alarming rise in anti-Semitism and the measures people are taking for self-preservation.
