BoomDock. The concept is simple. Many responsible gun owners are very concerned about storing firearms safely. We’re also concerned with storing them in a manner that allows us to get to them quickly. Small lockable boxes provide great access to handguns. But rifles and shotguns have historically been harder to manage. Many of us have taken to basic obfuscation–hiding the guns from kids and outsiders, but that has risks. Obviously. Kids aren’t stupid. At least some of them aren’t.

What to do? BoomDock has the solution. You can mount one of these on a wall, and securely lock up a long gun. The guts are easily configured to cradle unique firearm designs. The lock can be opened with an RFID card, or with a key-code. The device even has a motion sensor activated light.

When we found BoomDock on the floor of SHOT Show, I did have a few questions. The gun is meant to be kept in the BoomDock, ready to roll. So what prevents the post that the rifle or shotgun will be resting on from depressing the trigger? There’s a post that goes behind the trigger, too, that blocks it. Guns have to come off of the BoomDock before the trigger can be activated. I’d also suggest using a safety, as a back-up. Even though the system has some fool-proof design features, I can still see some fools putting guns in carelessly, or fumbling with them under extreme stress when removing them and catching something on the trigger. Take your time, and train with the BoomDock.

That said, this is a great design. I’ve been looking for something exactly like this for a long time. I grew up in a family that often (still) keeps a loaded long-gun behind the back door. It is typically a single shot .410, but still. The kids in the family knew better than to mess with it, but we still did. The BoomDock allows the same sort of access, but without the potential risk. It sells for $289.
